Web Browsers

Does the display of some websites (even this one) look strange on your computer? It could be because the site is badly designed and does not comply with official published standards. Or, perversely it could be that the site is well designed with a high level of standards compliance but that the web browser you are using to display the website does not support the official standards.

For quite a few years now standards compliance among the most popular browsers has been good - with one notable exception - Microsoft Internet Explorer, in particular Version 6. For the vast majority of users, Internet Explorer is the default browser because it comes with the computer as delivered along with the Microsoft Windows operating system, so it has been widely used. For this reason, web designers have for years gone to extraordinary lengths to try to make their pages display well in Internet Explorer in spite of it's quirky behaviour.

However, times have moved on, and if you are still using an old browser version you are advised to upgrade to one of the alternative browsers that are available free of cost and which are easy to install in just a few moments.

Get FirefoxI recommend and use Firefox, an Open Source web browser from the Mozilla Foundation.

There are links to other good browsers (and other useful free tools) on the Free Tools page at South Derbyshire.
