On Tuesday, 6th October Bob Brown from Evesham came to talk about the plants he grows at his nursery, Cotswold Garden Flowers. There were tables and buckets at the front of the hall, full of flowers - so much colour at this time of the year!
He began by speaking about foliage and the leaf shapes and textures that give movement in a garden. His own garden is small and yet he grows quite large and spreading plants in it. They are, however, carefully chosen. He said that one should not be always busy in the garden but sit and take time to consider the plants and what they contribute to the garden. Sit in different places too to do this.
Many of the plants were more unusual but he also mentioned what he called supermarket car park plants as not to be despised since they grow well and provide good colour-Abelia and Skimmia being among these. Michaelmas Daisies occupied him largely as they provide colour for a long time and certainly well into the Autumn. Pixie Red Eye, Fellowship and Porcelain were some of the most impressive.
Bob had brought with him plants to sell at the end of the meeting and these were much appreciated by the audience.
The next meeting of the club will be on Tuesday, November 10th when Stuart Dixon will be welcomed to the club again. This time his subject will be ‘Gardens with Rustic Charm’
