On Tuesday 8th November Sylvia Martin came to the Garden Club with a talk entitled ”Kitchen Gardens Revisited” about the history of gardening and gardeners, a new topic for the meeting. The first kitchen gardens began many centuries ago. As long ago as Elizabethan times there were enclosed, raised beds which we now think as being quite modern.
The talk dealt with gardens in those early times and went through until now, drawing upon some of the great houses of the National Trust and English Heritage where one can see kitchen gardens of the 19th century which have been saved or reinstated. One of these, of course, is Calke Abbey.
Next month on Tuesday 13th the club will have its Christmas social at which Richard Wood will give a short talk and there will be refreshments and mince pies.
This will be at the usual charge of £1.00 for members and £3.00 for visitors. Village Hall at 7.30pm
