John HarpurThe History of the Harpur-Crewe Family

Norman Monahan 29th February 2008

The large audience for the February meeting of the Ticknall Preservation and Historical Society was given a most detailed development of the Harpur-Crewe Family.

The family originated from France and may have arrived at the same time as the Norman Conquest probably associated with musicians. After establishing themselves in Oxfordshire the members of the family appear to have links, by marriage, with many of the aristocratic families throughout the country – the Lees, Ferrers, and Willoughbys.

The family moved to Calke Abbey in 1700 and commenced rebuilding the house that now stands on the site. The family’s origins were conventional with clever marriages bringing money and land. With the 7th Baronet (Sir Henry) marrying a lady’s maid and the 10th Baronet (Sir Vauncey) a reclusive man and collector of natural history specimens their importance began to decline. However the family’s decline resulted in the Nation’s gain as the property is now in the care of the National Trust and can be visited and enjoyed by the general public.
