A new publication from the Ticknall Preservation and Historical Society is to hit the bookshelves this week. "A History of the Harpurs and Calke Abbey" is by TPHS committee member Norman Monahan who is a volunteer at Calke Abbey and an expert on the Harpur Crewe family history and Calke Abbey.
The book has been funded by the TPHS as a tribute to the late Norman Clarke who as well as being Chairman of the TPHS for many years, was Farm Manager for the Harpur Crewe family and Head Warden when the National Trust acquired the property in 1986. The TPHS committee decided it would be a lasting tribute to Norman Clarke to commission a book as so much of his life was devoted to Calke Abbey and the Harpur Crewe family.
The National Trust have been supportive of this project and have given Norman access to documents, pictures etc. South Derbyshire District Council Heritage Officer Philip Heath has also provided Norman with help.
Designed by Origin Design of Melbourne, the book will be sold in the Calke Abbey Shop and will also be on sale through the world wide web. The book is 68pp, A5 in size and uses both colour and BW photographs and illustrations throughout. As well as the history of the family there is also a section on heraldry which helps to explain the Harpur history.
It is priced at £7.00 (£6.00 for members of the TPHS). To order your copy please download the price list and order form from the DOCUMENTS link on the main menu at the top of the page.
