The Ticknall Archaeological Research Group (TARG) got off to a flying start on 4 March when they held a successful launch at the Ticknall Village Hall. After an informative and entertaining evening which filled the main hall, 58 people signed up to get involved in excavations, pottery identification, fieldwork and landscape recording.
The group has been set up with the aid of a £50,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant to study the early potteries in Ticknall, their products and the landscape and social contexts for them. It is also supported by the National Trust, and by Archaeological Project Services who are based in Lincolnshire. APS will provide training for the TARG volunteers.
The Group’s first activity will be an excavation at 22 Main Street, Ticknall, from March 15th – 19th. Visitors will be welcome between 10a.m. and 3p.m. to see the work in progress. The site is thought to be one of Ticknall’s earliest potteries, possibly already working by the late 1400s.
The next activities will be landscape history walks, and fieldwalking.
