Town Centre Development Plans Approved

The development site today. Photo: Ticknall LifeA massive retail development which will form part of the exciting future of Swadlincote has been given the go ahead.

Members of South Derbyshire District Council’s Planning Committee approved amended plans on Tuesday night (July 27) for the redevelopment of the former Wraggs Pipes site, in Coppice Side.

Applicants Rokeby (Swadlincote) Ltd and Peveril Securities Ltd were granted permission for 10 retail units (two for food), a five-screen cinema and seven units for restaurants, bars or pubs.

As part of the development, four historic buildings on the site, adjacent to the chimney, will be refurbished and converted. A total of 229 car parking spaces will also be created.

Frank McArdle, Chief Executive of South Derbyshire District Council, believes the plans are integral to the town’s development.

He said: “I welcome this fantastic opportunity for Swadlincote.

“I would compliment the developer on having worked tirelessly to bring in this huge investment in the town, particularly through these last two years of recession.

“I think it is a clear indication of the confidence that the business community has in South Derbyshire, and in Swadlincote in particular. This has been in evidence through the heavy investment made by Sainsbury’s, the commencement of work to the golf course and hotel, and the Council’s efforts in revamping the Delph to the tune of more than £1 million of Government funding.

“The revival of the Swadlincote Chamber of Trade is vital at this time and the dialogue with new retailers will play an important part in taking this town forward and giving it the facilities the public of South Derbyshire expect and are entitled to.”
